FGM has been a criminal offence in the UK since 1985. In 2003 it also became a criminal offence for UK nationals or permanent UK residents to take their child abroad to have female genital mutilation.

It is illegal in the UK to perform or assist someone to perform FGM on herself either within or outside the UK. It is also illegal to assist a non-UK national or resident to perform FGM outside the UK on a UK national or resident. If you’re concerned that a child may be at risk or if you are under pressure to have FGM performed:
